The ORB notes on 30/09/1940 - 625116 - Sgt. Dunlop. CEA awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty in operations carried out against the enemy.

It is possible that this award was given in relation to a reconnaissance sortie flown on the 30th of April, 1940, which was 59 Squadron's first of the war. The pilot, P/O N.B. Hallmark received the D.F.C, was promoted to the rank of Squardon Leader and soon after posted to another squadron for flying duties. At the time, F/Sgt was a Sgt.
